There has been a huge rise in film-based theatre shows at the Fringe over the past few years.

I always thought it as interesting as we have been turning movies into musicals for years, but the idea of turning a film into a play seems almost bizarre.

However, these film-inspired shows at the Fringe are a little stranger within their own niche as they tend to go down the route of essentially retelling it like you would with a pal at the pub.

“A One Woman Titanic Parody in 59 Minutes or Less” is a retelling of James Cameron’s 1997 cinematic masterpiece by Katie Thayer with some historical facts sprinkled in to clear things up.

The show starts off strong with Katie telling us how the movie came out around the time she became obsessed with the Titanic and how it essentially became her special subject. We all get a good laugh as she uses homemade scenery and quick changes between wigs and glasses for the characters along with a couple of finger puppets. The momentum doesn’t last, though, as it becomes quite clear this is pretty much going to be a majoritively movie-based script with the odd few comments thrown in.

There were some fun moments with water pistols, but overall, it could sometimes fall flat.

I wish I could say more and offer my insights, but I can’t really offer anything to a show that is essentially what it says it is: a parody in 59 minutes or less. Yes, it may be closer to the movie script than a full-blown parody, but it is a parody nonetheless.

The two audience members beside me were having the time of their lives, so maybe this is just me not being a big enough fan of the film.

If you are looking for an easygoing show with a familiar subject matter, I’d say go for it, but if you were expecting it to go beyond into a deep parody, this might not be the show for you.
