After Detto’s performance in “When I Grow Up” at last year’s Fringe, I’ve been a keen fan of his work.

“Giuseppe’s Love Quest” uses a different angle to “When I Grow Up”. Instead of written suggestions of childhood dream jobs being acted out with Detto onstage, this show is more in Detto’s control.

We meet Guiseppe who has never been in love and wants nothing more than to understand what it is. That way, he knows what to look for. He is determined to find it by going on a love quest, and he needs all of us to go on one too. He searches for all things associated with love from hugs, to first dates, and kisses, seeking help from the audience to understand what it all means and, in some cases, to help demonstrate. We had a beautiful moment of crossed wires at the performance I attended where an audience member misunderstood her instruction on demonstrating a hug and instead danced with Detto, leading to a domino dance effect with almost every other participant.

Don’t worry if you are afraid of audience participation. Detto is the kindest clown I’ve seen. He will invite but will never ever pressure and prefers to make himself the joke rather than the audience.

I laughed loud, I laughed hard, and I laughed a lot. I hope you see the show and, for once, I hope you have latecomers. “Giuseppe’s Love Quest” is a triumph of silliness and a show that is so easy to fall in love with!
