Clowns are the purest creatures on the planet. They experience every day as if it’s their first and are mesmerised by the magic of the world that we become blind to as we get older. You would be amiss to think that they are ignorant or stupid. They are, in fact, quite the opposite. A clown sees the same problems that you and I do, but they aren’t tied down by “experience” or expectations. They are willing to try, fail, then try something different, until they succeed. They revel in their success and allow themselves to feel the joy of achievement no matter how small or how long it took them.

They are also just really freaking funny!

“Glob” by French Canadian company Les Foutoukour is a masterpiece in clowning. Rémi Jacques and Jean-Félix Bélanger have us in the palm of their hands from the moment they emerge from the fog in a set that is somewhat reminiscent of “Waiting for Godot”. Although there is no existentialism to be found here. We are treated to a delightful array of explorations from our Glob clowns as they discover the world around them. Through acrobatics, juggling, tap dancing, and music, they bring joy into a world that could change at any moment.

They were also completely unphased by the obnoxious ringtone of an audience member blaring through the auditorium. They made it part of the show, dancing to the pop song and even calling back to the moment in lighthearted teasing throughout the show. Because it is a clown show, the audience was, of course, filled with a lot of families. Although this type of audience is drawn to the show, I urge everyone of every age to get tickets to see “Glob”. It was an experience so pure, I, too, felt like a clown, knowing nothing of late running trains, politics, or taxes. Only experiencing life and the joy we are capable of experiencing.
