When I moved to Scotland, I knew that one of their famous poets was Robert Burns, but I had no idea how much Scots loved their wee Rabbie.
"She Burns" is a show where four witches, played by Sarah Macgillivray, Lori Flannigan, Eilidh Hughes, and Nicola Alexander, are trying to invoke the spirit of Rabbie Burns during their séance. There is a sense of cheekiness in the air, smiles across the cast's faces, like they have a secret that they are only too delighted to keep from us. It adds to their air of mystery.
We are entertained for the next hour with songs and poems by the beloved Rabbie Burns interluded with stories and conversations about the man himself and the women he loved.
The production does not shy away from criticising the great poet over his behaviour towards women, noting that he probably wouldn't have fared too well in the Me Too movement. However, the witches find comfort and beauty in his words and connect with it. Can they separate art from artist? I mean, it's a little easier to do when the artist has been dead for 208 years!
The show is a delight filled with beautiful harmonies and great Scottish banter. I will admit that as a non-Scottish native, a little bit of the show went over my head, but not enough for me to be taken out of it. The Scottish people that I saw the show with were truly touched by it, which shows its ability to capture the essence of Scotland.
"She Burns" is a wonderful night out that gives you a chance to hear beautiful Scottish folk songs in the comfort of a theatre space and not a crowded pub.
If this beautiful show returns for another fringe, I highly recommend you go see it!
