" 1984" is a story that has fascinated audiences since the novel by George Orwell was released in 1949. It has been adapted into films, radio plays, television series, and even an opera! BoxTaleSoup tackles the famous story in a fresh new way... with puppets! The set and the puppets were all made from reclaimed materials, and they are visually stunning!
With simple set changes, puppets, and subtle costume alterings, the company trio of Antonia Christophers, Mark Collier, and Noel Byrne were able to play a multitude of characters in the dystopian world of the play with clarity and precision.
The story feels timeless. I think of the little flap I have covering my webcam when I see Winston with his back to the telescreen that is constantly watching him. We all have that little fear of someone watching us, that fear of slipping up when we haven't even done anything wrong. With people constantly reporting one another to the authorities, those in power receiving luxuries whilst the common folk are deprived, we can't help but think of the global political landscape of our time and wonder if we are doing any better than the characters in the play.
I did find the switch between human and puppet performances for certain characters to be without rhyme nor reason, and I struggled to suspend my disbelief during the torture scene. However, these are small quibbles that I feel are either just my own or could be tweaked slightly. They are certainly not enough for me to disregard the success that this adaptation is or that it was a joy to watch!

BoxTaleSoup are going on tour with the play, and I can't recommend it enough! Go see it, should it come to your town!
Were there any adaptions at the fringe that you adored? Hoping you fringe again next year and that you all had a fantastic fringe! 😁
