I love video games and I adore video game soundtracks! I’m not ashamed to admit that I’ll pop on some “Crash Bandicoot” whilst I’m cleaning around the house!

So a video game music concert that also acts as an interactive video game itself sounds like an awesome show!

And it is!

The show follows a storyline which changes depending on the day you went to see it. You log into the theatre’s wifi (thank you Gilded Balloon!) and you scan a QR code to access the game. There are breaks in the story, which you follow along with on screen, where you decide what the scenario goes next by voting in the gaming system. However, before you vote, volunteers from the audience must go up and fight the case for the decision they feel should be made.

Once the votes are in, the storyline is decided, and a visual for the story (which is in classic video game-style) appears on screen as the band plays music live!

The show is a lot of fun. However, it can have some limitations from the crowd. I’ll be honest and say here that I really don’t think that this is a show for kids aged eight and up as they advertise. Now don’t get me wrong, it’s not profanity filled, violent, or laden with nudity. These are pretty clean cut guys having a good time playing video game music, but the story does lend itself to some decisions that, when it comes to the open forum debate, it gets a little inappropriate for children to be coming onstage.

The show, to me, is more geared towards older gamers who will revel in the nostalgia and can also easily come onto the stage to debate topics like getting drunk on a plane or hitting up “da club”. When a child comes onstage to talk about this, it’s just awkward for everyone.

I feel like my crowd being mostly children has been a bit of a fluke, and if you and your buddies love video games, you should absolutely come along! I had a ball playing the game, and if the age limit of the audience were higher, I really feel like this could have achieved the full five star treatment.
