So, I believe I’ll be forgiven by Mr McNamara Walker for discussing some of the contents from his super secret meeting even if it means that it might be seen by… The Heterosexuals!

“The Heterosexuals” by Johnnie McNamara Walker is a solo show that has endless energy and laughs. We are all greeted warmly as we are told we can relax in our disguises as we are now in a room of exclusively queer people and can talk about those “heterosexuals”.

I was a little apprehensive about the show as I was worried that it could run out of steam on the topic and become a drawn out, repeated joke. I couldn’t have been farther from the truth.

Yes, the show pokes fun at heterosexual behaviour and has gags about the queer community having super powers like teleportation and connecting to the hive mind, but it is also a beautiful coming of age story that has a lot of heart. It was a joy to hear about how natural it was for him to like Judy Garland growing up or to want to take tap dancing as his chosen sport. To see the hetero community as “other” for a change was so refreshing and has real value to an audience!

Although the show can get quite sentimental, it is also an hour of high energy comedy that will have you laughing until your cheeks hurt!

Tonally, I did find the shift to his teenage years a little jarring. I wonder if there is perhaps a better way to segway into this section as it felt a little out of left field when compared to everything else.

If you’re looking for a great solo show and something to make you laugh whilst also touching your heart, this would be the show for you!
