Every year, I give a few shows in the free fringe a go! My wife and I did our very first fringe by going to three free fringe shows as we were house hunting at the time and didn't have a lot of money to spare. We were very lucky that we ended up seeing three great shows!
When looking through the free fringe offerings, "The Day My Sugar Daddy Dumped Me" jumped right out at me.
A one woman musical comedy about being a sugar baby featuring a rap about the clitoris is one hell of an elevator pitch, so I decided to take a chance on this show!
I kid you not when I say this is one of the best damn free fringe shows that I have ever seen!
The show is performed in the back room of a coffee shop, and it's probably the worst venue I've been at for fringe. The venue made no effort to present itself as a theatre space. You walk into a room with natural light coming through open windows and a black curtain on a rail to create a backdrop. It completely pulls you out of the mindset of being at a theatre. During the first three to five minutes of the show, I was so distracted due to my surroundings, but Becky Goodman was just so captivating in her storytelling abilities that I was soon drawn in to her world away from the coffee shop.
We journeyed with her through her early adulthood and string of bad relationships with older men. Goodman shatters the fourth wall, feeling more like a storyteller than a perfomer, and we are feasting on her every word.
It's difficult to discuss a lot of the show without giving it away. Becky gets taken advantage of a lot, and when she finally doesn't, heartbreak doesn't just happen for her but for all of us in the audience as well.
This show needs to come back with a proper theatre space and someone to tech the show,so Goodman doesn't have to control it all from her phone!
Looking back, I feel like I'm not selling this show enough, but all you need to know is that if you go to see "The Day My Sugar Daddy Dumped Me", you will laugh, you will cry, and you will give a standing ovation!
